The launch of the new macOS 10.15 Catalina brings with itself a brand-new wallpaper. Unfortunately, it’s not a fully dynamic wallpaper – for now at least. But, it is available in dark and light themes, to adhere to your Mac’s Dark or Light Mode setting.

However, it can be seen in the macOS 10.15 preview on Apple’s webpage, that the new Catalina wallpaper is indeed fully dynamic. It’s very likely that we’ll see it in a future beta release of the OS.

The latest macOS Catalina is named after Santa Catalina Island in southern California. So it is not surprising that Apple chose this gorgeous location to be the new wallpaper of the OS.

A Reddit user extracted the original wallpaper file directly from macOS 10.15 and made it available for download.

If you want to have the Catalina wallpaper to appear as a ‘Dynamic Desktop’ option in System Preferences, here’s what you need to do:

1. Download the .heic file from this link.

2. Create a new folder and put the file inside.

3. Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver. Drag the folder to the side menu under Folders.

4. Choose the Dynamic Desktop option.

Alternatively, you can use the individual light and dark wallpapers on their own, since the link contains the light, the dark and the dynamic versions of the Catalina wallpaper.

To do that, simply redo the steps above, but with the regular images in the folder, and choose the one you want from the Desktop Pictures section.
